Format Your New Blog’s Permalinks

When setting up your wordpress blog, you will keep most of the default settings ‘as-is’ but there is one that you definitely want to change and that’s your permalinks.

When I first set up my blog, I wasn’t aware of this until a few weeks into it so thought I would put together a quick demo on how to format your permalinks for anyone who is setting up their first wordpress blog.  It is a very quick and simple step but also important so that you have clean looking URL’s for sharing and SEO.

    This was really valuable. How would we know which boxes to click and what to take out if nobody tells us? I always wondered what I was suppose to do on that perma-link page. Thanks for sharing this.

    Hi Laura,

    Great tip. I too, wasn’t aware of this when I first set up and wound up having to create a number of redirects to handle the change. It’s great to have this out there for folks just getting started. Perhaps they can avoid having to learn it the hard way.

    @Linnea, Hi Linnea,

    I was fortunate that I did change mine before I started posting but that’s why I wanted to mention. I figured, if I didn’t know others might not as well and hopefully can alleviate all that ‘backtracking’ like you had to do. Thanks, Laura

    Hi Laura,

    I am getting ready to migrate my wordpress.com blog over to wordpress.org on my own domain. Since I have wordpress installed I am figuring out which theme I want to use. And then here you are with this little doodad, perfect timing is what that is.

    Thanks so much for this little, but big, tip.

    All the best,

    Alan

    @Alan Eames, Hey Alan, Cool! Yes, so much better to have benefit of these little tidbits early on, isn’t it?! – saves the backtracking. If I can help in any way let me know. I’m still learning myself but sometimes that’s helpful because the learning is “fresh” :) . Congrats on making the switch! “peace of mind” Thanks, Laura
