Google +1: What Do You Think?

Have you seen the new feature Google is introducing? +1.   If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s just a simple way to Like Google search results to share with your friends and connections.

Once you activate, whenever you’re signed into your Google account, your search results will have a +1 icon next to it.  It works like Diggs in Digg and Likes on Facebook.  If you find the search result useful or just enjoy the linked site, you hit the +1 icon. Google says by +1-ing a result you’re giving it a recommendation, a stamp of approval. More +1’s on a result means the site is more interesting.

Right now your +1 social network is limited to people in your gmail or google talk chat list, your “My Contacts” group in Google Contacts and people who follow in Google Reader or Google Buzz but Google says connecting via non-Google services like Twitter will be coming in the future.  The feature will also be available on websites in the future as well.

Here’s the short intro video…

Hey Laura, it will be interesting to say the least. Seeing as big as Google is and how dominant they are in the search engine market, I think this is going to be a pretty important development we’re going to want to keep our eyes on, especially the impact it will have on google rankings which I’m sure will be weighted more than facebook likes or shares or tweets, since it will be a google service (which they’ll say is better and therefore deserves a higher weighting; in reality, they’re just looking after their own, because they can!). But I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Hi Laura,
Thanks for the Google +1 Tip! I would imagine that getting linked with Google would be very beneficial when it comes to getting ranking with them! I best get with the system!
All the best, Linda

Great information Laura – and I really like your video! I can certainly see the benefit of Google +1, it’s just that my first reaction was – another one?! I just managed to get a system going with FB and Twitter updates – ah well, it’s all good stuff! Thanks again …

Hi Laura!

We had heard of this button some time ago when Google had just released and just now started to see it in a few blogs. We’ll see how (and if) it helps businesses.

The only drawback of the +1 button for us is that Digg, or Facebook are social networks, while Google isn’t; so that may be a key element missing for this button to work as well as the “like” or “digg” buttons work in the other social networks.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for this, Laura! I was wondering what that was! It actually showed up on one of my blogs, and don’t really know how that happened, so I need to do some research….hmmmm…

I think it’s a good thing! Thanks for the info!

God bless!

Laura,

I think that it could be a good thing for people with large social networks on Twitter. Can not wait till they add the Twitter feature.

I think internet marketers should not ignore this feature from Google. It may not show great significance as the facebook like buttons but it can have other impacts in the future.

Great post Laura. I like Google plus 1 and I see it becoming the new era of search engine optimization. It’s still in the early phases and I’m sure it will function better in the future.

Its too early for my verdict, I only just installed it on a test blog of mine a few days ago. I know, I know I am a little behind, but I had some important family issues to deal with! 🙂

I have briefly checked out G+, I like the interface and how its setup and all shows you what someone from Apple can do when they jump ship. I even read on a blog that the author mentioned it would replace blogging (for some people) as bold a statement as that is it might be partially true but who knows.

Who knows if it will slap FB or even how big it will be or it will fizzle out like their previous attempt. Either way will be interesting to see how it develops, but at the moment I will stick with Twitter and FB.

I’d love this function if they also introduce the -1 button. Because with just the +1 button, it’s just a matter of how popular something is, but if you have the -1 button as well, it’s a matter of quality.

Laura,

I love Google +, it seems like a bit of a hybrid social media site but it’s great nonetheless. I have definitely been using it more often then other social sites. It has the opportunity to be BIG and be the content creators got-to sharing space.

I love Google Plus. I think I get way more interaction with people than from Twitter or Facebook. Love it!

Google+ is definitely something new that is worth to explore. I wasn’t a fan of it in the first few days I was invited but when I learned its cool features, wow. Just amazed!
