Rome Wasn't Built in a Day

Top 10 Network Marketing Newbie Mistakes – Part 2

Last week, well actually it’s been 2 weeks now…. Things have just been so crazy the past couple weeks.  My company is having an awesome promotion and business is just BOOMING so I’m late posting part 2 of my Top 10 Network Marketing Newbie Mistakes.

If you missed Part 1 (mistake #10 and #9), here is it https://laurampaulson.com/top-10-network-marketing-newbie-mistakes-part-1

Here’s my #8 and #7…

8.  Quitting before the blessing and thinking the grass is greener.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day”.  Building a business is no different.  It doesn’t happen overnight.  However, too many are looking for that immediate gratification and when it doesn’t happen overnight they quit – before they even really get started.  This is very unfortunate but it is what it is.  Not everyone is geared toward owning and building a business.   If your mindset is “well, I’ll try it for a month (or a couple months) and see how it goes” then really what’s the point because it’s that consistent, accumulative effort over time that creates the success so don’t be one of those who quit before the blessing.

It’s not to say that you can’t have success out of the gate but it’s really the exception and not the norm.  It takes time.  It takes time to learn the necessary skills and it takes time for your activity to transform into results.  How long it takes is also dependent on the individual person, how driven they are, how committed they are as well as how many available hours they have to work their business.

Successful people do not quit after a setback or challenge, but persevere and stay committed to themselves and their long term goals.

In addition, while it’s important to do your due diligence and ensure you are with the right company, it’s not the company that makes or breaks you – it’s YOU!!!  The grass is not greener somewhere else.  If you can’t make it here, you’re not going to make it there.  So, it’s important to “pick a horse and ride it with everything they’ve got”.  Ignore all the “noise” out there about the next best thing and just get to work, where you’re at, taking immediate, consistent and massive action.

<7.  Spamming the social networks and “puking” their business to everyone within 3 feet

You see it all the time, individuals spamming the social networks “puking” their business all over other people’s facebook, twitter, myspace profiles.  Don’t do it!  People know when your motivation is making a “sale” and that’s the fastest and easiest way to turn people off.  Instead, think of how you can give value and genuinely help people get what they want.   Think “long term”, not “short term”.

It’s all about relationships and trust.  Get to know people, be genuinely interested in THEM and what you can contribute to make THEIR lives better without expecting anything in return.  If you get a new business partner or a sale in the process, Great! it’s an added bonus but it shouldn’t be your motivation.

Well, I hope you got some value from this post today.  Stop by next week when I talk about Mistake #6 and #5.  Before you go though, please share this post with your facebook and twitter friends and leave a comment below.  It will be much appreciated!

  1. My favorite is when someone gets me on chat and starts selling me before they even say hello. It wants me to tell them, “Hello, McFly! What were you thinking McFly?”

  2. Laura,

Good points you make here. Definitely do not spam people with your business and your links. As far as quitting goes, sometimes quitting is the best thing you can do. Not every business and not every idea is successful. Some things you may begin only to find out there are major flaws or problems. But if you are quitting without putting in real time and effort, and you stop because it seems to be too much work, that’s probably giving up too soon.

    1. @Dr. Erica Goodstone, Hi Erica. While I do agree with what you’re saying about quitting, what I’m referring to is with Network Marketing. People don’t join companies, they join YOU and the work is the same regardless of company/product so changing companies isn’t the answer if you’re not successful where you’re at. We see too many in the Network Marketing industry jumping from opportunity to opportunity thinking “the grass is greener” and I believe a HUGE reason why the failure rate is so high.

Do your due diligence to ensure the company is a good fit but once you do, give it everything you’ve got.

      Thanks for the comment!

  3. I hope all the mlm’ers out there get this post! I get so many people posting crap on my fan page and tagging me in other areas promoting how “we are all going to be millionaires if we join this ground floor opportunity and waste all our money today!”

    Lol

Great insights, I am glad someone out there has there stuff together!

    Take care.

  4. I think all network marketing newbies have puked and spammed their business on people. I am guilty. Saying less is always better. I tend to think that thinking long term is what creates retention in a business. Good point you have made here. I have enjoyed your series. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Hi Laura,

Stopping by from TSA to say hi. Your points are spot on. I love the #7 ‘puking’. I think all newbies have been guilty at one point (smile). Thank goodness we’ve learned and figured out that – that’s not how we win people over.
